Habit

​​​​​​​Habit is an action that has emerged gradually, as a result of repetition, and now it is done by itself, without my will.

For example, I went into a dark room - mechanically, without hesitation, switched on the light. By the way, many people who have made repairs know: if the light switch is moved from the old place, it will not get on it for a while. Then the brain will turn on and figure out where the switch is. And then again there will be a habit of turning on the light mechanically.

Isaac Newton, in his book "The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy," when he formulated the first law of mechanics, seems to have written more about the habit:

Every body continues to rest in a state of rest or uniform rectilinear motion for now and since it does not force the applied forces to change this state.

Habits can also be defined as patterns of behavior that have developed over time. The formation of a habit is called accustoming, the elimination of a habit is an ablation.

Habits are very different: professional and domestic, social and individual, emerging gradually or almost instantly.

Social habits - the social order adopted in a given society. Individual habits - a reserve for social. When they are seen and claimed, they will be included in the social list. Initiative, business acumen - was previously punishable, and later became respected, became part of the "social I". Anyone who is initiative is considered a socially richer person than a person without initiative.

And most importantly - the habits are useful and harmful.

Sufficiently conditionally individual habits are divided into useful and harmful (sometimes pernicious). People sometimes have a lot of bad habits: smoking, throwing things around the apartment, having dinner at the TV screen, putting things off for later and the habit of stuttering with a foot when something does not go out, it does not work out, the habit of taking revenge, etc. Useful habits - go to bed in time, get up early, the habit of including the head if necessary, the habit of caring and living with love, the habit of seeing in people and in oneself first and foremost good traits.

Human habits are the most important characteristic of his personality. Habits are formed in character, and character determines fate. Our habits are both our friends and our enemies, so we need to watch them closely. Unfortunately, bad habits stick to us: to accustom yourself to go to bed on time, you need time and effort, and to watch TV after midnight, you just need to relax...

An important rule: wean from bad mistakes is a matter of little prospect. If there is a similar task, formulate it not as a fight with a bad habit, but as the development of a new good habit. It’s bad to whip, it’s good to teach.

The habit is the result of a recurrence and is usually formed on 21 day (with a daily repetition). Will the habit become a feature of character? - It will become when several circumstances are added: if a person understands the meaning, the need for this new habit; if new actions of a person fit well into his lifestyle and are supported by his environment; and, finally, if visible positive results soon begin to emerge from the acquired habit. If you are attentive to your life, you will not allow bad habits to stick to you. If you still believe in yourself, you will always cherish your former good habits and accustom yourself to new useful habits.

How to start developing a new good habit in place of a bad old one? Can re-education still be effective? Rarely, but can. Choosing a strategy, you need to take into account many things: is a bad habit strong, an opportunity to appeal to the mind and will of a person, his ability to work on himself, even the age of a person. As long as a bad habit is not fixed, you can (and even better) not pay attention to it, switching yourself or another to other things, activities, hobbies. If the bad habit is fixed, it is already useless to distract the person, already decisive actions are required. The most radical decision: physical intervention in a person’s life, totally excluding the possibility of conducting a way of life for him with bad habits. It is clear that this is an extreme case, and it is better not to bring it up.
