Personal development

Personality development is part of a person’s overall development. In the development of man, in addition to the development of the individual, there is also physical development, and the development of mental functions. It is not necessary to confuse these different developments: there can be a perfectly developed personality with mediocrely formed memory and with poor physical development. Human growth and its development interact, alternating with each other.

Cucumber can only grow. Wet land and sun contribute to this, but it is impossible to train and develop external procedures: the cucumber grows according to its internal program. A person - more opportunities, a person’s development, training his body or soul contributes to body growth, increased spirituality, increased mental depth, flexibility or perseverance. Anyone who trains his body knows that certain workouts contribute to the growth of muscle mass. On the other hand, it is possible to develop only that for which the necessary prerequisites have been created by the growth process. No one will develop a one-year-old infant of masculinity - he has not grown enough, the base has not appeared for this.

In a person, growth and development support each other and alternate with each other in stages. This is reminiscent of the alternation of horizontal and vertical movement: there is an accumulation of knowledge and skills (there is a horizontal growth), then there is a sharp jump, a transition to a new level (there was a development, a jump upward), then development of this level (growth as a horizontal movement) people go with maximum intensity in childhood.

With age, growth is physical, that intellectual - slows down, and from a certain period the majority starts to go in the opposite direction: the intellect decreases, the memory weakens, the muscles gradually atrophy. It is interesting that personal development in this case can continue.

Personality development is one of the central themes of practical psychology, and it is understood very differently, including because of the terminological confusion. I use the same phrase "personality development", in reality, experts have in mind at least four different meanings and, accordingly, four different topics. These are:

• "What are the mechanisms and dynamics of personality development" (here the development of the personality is investigated as a process),

• "What the personality achieves in its development" (this is the level of personality development, the theme of the development outcome),

• "In what ways and means parents and society can form a personality from the child "(the topic of personality formation) and

•" How, by what means does a person develop himself as an individual? ", where the development of the personality is understood as self-improvement in the process of both authorial actions.

Talk about development as a process is a conversation about the dynamics of this process, about its various mechanisms. Development occurs in the joint activity of the child and the adult, development can be the result of studies or training, development can be the result of resolving internal contradictions, development can be the result of formation - the process of developing the personality is multifaceted and complex. Understanding the "development of the personality" as a complex but mostly natural process is more characteristic of the theoretical psychology exploring this process.

As for the results of personality development, we remember the classical: growth is a quantitative change, development is a qualitative change. If you see the book "The Development of the Personality of Preschool Children," you know that you will find there a description of how the child’s personality changes qualitatively from year to year, such as when a child has neoplasms. The main questions to the topic of personal development results are "What new formations can we talk about as qualitatively new?", "How can you verify that development really happened?", "Can we talk about the level of development of a person, compare people by level personal development! " and "What are the tops of personal development?"

The topic of personality formation attracted many researchers, beginning with LS. Vygotsky, A.S. Makarenko and A.N. Leontief. The psychology of the Soviet period, primarily in the person of the Vygodsky school, was based on the priority of the social and cultural environment, but the concrete ways of influencing and model of upbringing, which provided the necessary pedagogical effect, always remained a place of fierce controversy.

Of particular interest to us is the development of the personality, which we can carry out ourselves. Calls for personal development only make sense when someone can implement them. Is it possible? - Yes, it is possible. The development of personality can not be a faceless, not a natural involuntary process, but that which man himself arbitrarily consciously does. A person can develop himself as a person. People can develop, as a person, others. Assistance in the development of personality, the development of methods of development and self-improvement of personality, training of personal development - this direction is more typical for practical psychology.
