"Personal growth" and "Development of personality" - as concepts, these are quite different things, but in practice they are not very different. Even experts call them, confusing, and so and so.

Growth is called quantitative changes, and if in the process of change something in a person becomes more (confidence, strength, reaction speed) while these changes have occurred from within, naturally - in this case they speak about the process of personal growth. For example, all children, by virtue of their natural biological maturation and the care of their parents, grow up to their own psychological and educational level before kindergarten, then to school, their school is raised to the institute, then life pushes them to the next growing up ... This is a natural or passive personal growth.

Of course, in the process of growth, qualitative jumps can sometimes occur-transformations. The caterpillar grows - and suddenly turns into a chrysalis, and the chrysalis - into a fluttering butterfly. Also the child grows and grows, and now the teenager is on the spot, then the young man, and after a while the young man will become an adult. However, these transformations are not a natural growth in pure form, real Mowgli remain only beasts, in themselves children do not turn into human beings. The child turns into a person only under the condition of the educating influence of human culture. Accordingly, it was already not only growth, it was already - the development of man and personality.

What is development?

We remember the classical: growth is a quantitative change, development is a qualitative change. If you see the book "The Development of the Personality of Preschool Children," you know that you will find there a description of how the child’s personality changes qualitatively from year to year, such as when a child has neoplasms. The main questions to the topic of personal development results are "What new formations can we talk about as qualitatively new?", "How can you verify that development really happened?", "Can we talk about the level of development of a person, compare people by level personal development! " and "What are the tops of personal development?"

In contrast to quantitative growth, development is called qualitative changes. If in the process of changes a person becomes something else in something important, qualitative changes took place with him, they talk about the process of personal development. In practice, in life, the source of these qualitative changes are usually influences from outside: the boy was ill-bred, with him they worked out - and the boy became another - brought up. The girl was uneducated, but went to school, studied, and became - a girl educated. Qualitative changes in us do not fall from the sky and do not spontaneously germinate from within - it is someone that is being created. Someone who worked on us - or ourselves, if we began to change ourselves. This is not spontaneous generation, it is activity towards us.

Accordingly, we can give another, more practical criterion for distinguishing growth from development:

Growth occurs from within, from itself, development is the result of special influence from outside.

Accordingly, personal growth is an increase in the potential of the individual due to the internal dynamics of the personality nucleus and its interaction with the environment. It can be said so: it is primarily a quantitative change, understood as occurring from within. In contrast, personality development is done by someone - that is, the person himself, his family or society. If the influence from outside on the person turned out to be effective, led to qualitative changes - the development of the personality took place.

My mother fed me, and I ate and grew up. I gained weight not because I enlarged myself or my mother enlarged me, I grew up, because with my food at my age my body grows itself. This is growth. Or: the teacher has taught me to learn on my own and with desire. I studied, but made me loving to learn - a teacher. This is development.

From the point of view of practice, the most important difference between "personal growth" and "personality development" is in the psychological arsenal of possible means of influencing the processes that are taking place. What in our arsenal, if we want to help the personal growth of a person? - Only three things: belief in a person, creating a free supporting environment and - psychotherapy, that is, support and treatment in case of problems. Little. What is in the arsenal of a specialist psychologist involved in the development of the personality of the pupil, the client, the participant in the training? Here the arsenal is much richer: cooperation in its self-development, study, training, transfer of knowledge, presentation of samples, training of skills. And also - rewards and punishments, suggestion and infection, involvement and other positive manipulations, all varieties of positive and other reinforcement, on the whole all varieties of classical and operant conditioning.

In the table, the differences between "personal growth" and "personality development" can be seen more clearly.

It is clear that growth and development are interrelated and mutually reinforcing. Growth is the natural basis of development. You can only develop what you already have a natural base for. If the young man is still only the Artist on the level of business responsibility, does not even grow to the level of a Specialist, then it is useless to develop a Leader therein. He is still small. The speed of development is always limited by the need for the person to grow up to what he acquired during the training at the training. New personal roles should sprout in the soul, grow to the soul, only then they become not the outer masks, but the new face of personality. Only "develop", not looking at growth, is always impossible: development must be supported by natural growth. Learning should alternate with life, so that new knowledge is enriched with real experience, practice.
