Professiogram of the trainer - the leading psychological trainings (M. Smirnova)

If you type the word "psychological training" in the Internet search engine, he will instantly give out about half a million different references, from personal development trainings to motivational ones, from psychodramatic to bodily-oriented ones (and I still do not mention strange names that are difficult to name!). In the collection of professiograms "My profession is a psychologist" (M., 2007) the work of a business trainer is described in detail, but psychologists spend a huge amount of training work outside the business context, conducting personal trainings.

Wikipedia tells us that the first training groups (T-groups), aimed at increasing competence in communication, founded in 1946. Kurt Levin along with his colleagues. And in the 1960s, social and life skills training courses arose, based on the tradition of humanistic psychology of Karl Rogers. These trainings were used to train teachers, consultants and managers for their development and psychological support.

Despite a noticeable decline in activity during the crisis, training activities are developing, there is an increasing differentiation of trainings and isolation of individual areas, the quality and professionalism of the trainers’ work is seriously increasing. This is facilitated by trainings of trainers, helping young leaders master the profession. The International Association of Personnel Development Professionals has been set up, which sets itself the task of developing professional standards for training personal development trainings, attesting trainers and training companies.

As a leading psychological trainer, the coach works most often in three versions.

The first option is to be an internal trainer in a particular organization (company), providing training for employees of this organization. Most often this is the work of a business coach, but in some companies (for example, large network companies) this is the conduct of personal trainings aimed at developing communication skills, leadership skills, and the ability to work with people.

The second option is to become a coach, cooperating with one or another training center. Then the managers of the training center will organize the advertising of trainings and take on all the organizational aspects (organization of the premises, collection of money, payment of taxes).

And the third option is to choose the way of a freelance coach, working freely, independently recruiting groups and solving all organizational issues.

It is clear that these three quite different life and work situations, and the professiograms here will be somewhat different.

Those trainers who choose freelancing, and, as a result, greater flexibility in managing their own time, should understand that they will have to combine the actual training activity, which includes gathering information on the topic, methodical work, improving their skills, advertising work and a set of their own trainings (this includes the creation and support of your site, the writing of books and articles on the topics of ongoing trainings, the maintenance of thematic newsletters on the Internet, the creation of a client base, the thinking of marketing strategists second, maybe even telephone calls of customers over the phone). It is clear that not all people are capable of such a combination of diverse activities.

Most often, coaches work indoors: it can be assembly halls, training classes, rooms in office centers. The quality of the room influences both the customer satisfaction with the training and the coach’s efficiency. If the premises are uncomfortably located, if it is difficult to get to, or if it is tight, poorly lit, with unsuccessful ventilation, people will be uncomfortable, they will have to be distracted by everyday life, which will affect their evaluation of the training.

What are the main requirements for the hall, so that it would be convenient for both the coach and the participant to work? For a group of 20 people, the hall should be at least 40 square meters in area, the chairs should move freely, the hall should have a marker board or flipchart, a monitor for video broadcasting (or, as an alternative, a projector with a screen), a music center with CD and remote control. For participants, the organizers of the training usually give out badges, on which everyone can write his name (this facilitates communication during the lesson), pens, tablets and paper or notebooks for notes, and a table with tea and biscuits for small breaks. Often coaches prepare handouts for participants. This can include templates and tables for use during the training, as well as a brief overview of the information on the topic, to consolidate the material that has been passed.

What are the main requirements for leading personal trainings?

This is a special and professional, and personal characteristics, and all of them are closely intertwined.

The fact is that in the training activity one of the most important elements is the personality of the coach. Not a topic, not even his professionalism, but his personality: his life position, his attitude to people, his life experience, his energy and his sense of humor .... This is especially important if the coach does not conduct corporate (for employees of any organization), but open training (those that people come to their own volition). It is in open training that people often come to the trainer, not to the training, so the leader of open trainings is always a person; and most often, the leading open training - adults, already established, having their own style, their audience and their own, worked out for years, a vital position.

In any case, the leader of psychological trainings should have a psychological education and certificates that confirm the qualifications for conducting trainings on this topic. Those coaches who work with children under the age of must have appropriate education and qualifications.

The trainer can conduct trainings short-term (from an hour to several hours), one-day (from 6 to hours), or multi-day ( - or more days in a row). In any case, this is a very serious not only emotional but also physical exercise, so the coach must have good health and physical endurance. A natural demand is a set voice. To speak for hours on end, sometimes voicing a big hall and blocking the voices of others can only the coach who paid attention to the correct voice setting, and knows how to protect his ligaments, and correctly direct his voice stream.

Since the leading psychological trainings teach people, special requirements can be brought not only to their moral qualities, but even ... to their way of life. The discrepancy of the declared values ​​with those that the trainer really adheres to in life will necessarily be noted by the participants of the training and, of course, will not contribute to the increase of the authority of the coach. It’s hard to agitate for a healthy lifestyle to a smoking person who does not follow his own health - just about how to conduct communication skills trainings - rough and conflictual.

A compulsory requirement for the personality of the coach, where it is impossible to separate "personal" and "professional", is his communicative skills: openness, goodwill, listening, hearing and feeling of people, lively and quick engagement, quick reaction ... - will not be able to establish the necessary contact with the group. On the other hand, the ability to simply establish contact is not enough. The training is conducted so that people eventually gain certain experience, acquire some material, and for this the coach needs to have the skills of constructive communication, be able to highlight the main theses and deliver them in a bright and understandable form, in simple words. In addition, a big plus to the coach is a pleasant timbre of voice, rich intonation, mimicry and gesture. It is very good to have in your luggage the experience of public speaking or participating in a theater studio. A professional coach should be not only bright, but also be able to quickly get used to various roles. Being able to be different is also important for the coach, as well as the ability to feel the group.

In order for the group to work qualitatively and fruitfully, it is very important that the group has an atmosphere of trust in which people could easily ask all the questions that concern them and express all the doubts and protests that existed, and in general they would feel comfortable. Hence, the task of the facilitator is to create and maintain such an atmosphere, and also to teach the group itself to create such an atmosphere. And more broadly - the main task of the facilitator is to teach the group to work independently.

Psychological training often raises questions about goal-setting, even if they are not directly related to the topic of the training, so it’s good if the coach himself knows how to correctly set goals, and can explain the principles of goal-setting to others.

A particularly important and especially difficult skill that distinguishes an experienced coach from a beginner is the ability to work with a group, to be able to quickly get in touch, feel the group, manage the mood of the group and the complex processes taking place in the group - group dynamics.

In the living atmosphere of the training, an informal leader always appears in the group, which, if the facilitator does not manage the situation, can easily turn into an anti-leader and break the normal training process. To prevent such unwanted things, the trainer should not only know the laws of the group’s functioning, not just notice the bright and difficult people in the group on time, but also have the skills to "address" such people, be able to attract them to their side and channel their energy into the right one for training channel. The main advantage of working as a coach is the ability to communicate with a wide variety of people - perhaps the main difficulty of this profession. The need to be at the center of attention all the time can cause fatigue and professional burnout, so it is important for the coach to include time for rest and recovery in the plans. On the other hand, communication with people who have different experiences and views enriches and helps to develop both personally and professionally.
