Translation of the article - ABC Radio National Encounter Walking Meditati (author: Bryan)
"You must not lose faith in humanity. Mankind is an ocean; if a few drops in the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not get dirty. "
"The difference between what we do and what we are able to do would be enough to solve most of the world’s problems."
"If I had no sense of humor, I would have committed suicide a long time ago."
Mahatma Gandhi does not need a presentation. We all know the man who led the people of India to independence in 1947.
So, let’s move on to the advice of Mahatma Gandhi, which will help change you and the world around.
1. Change yourself.
You must be what you want to see the world. Our human greatness lies not in the ability to change the world, it’s just a myth of the atomic age. This is an opportunity to change yourself.
If you change yourself, you change the world. If you change your mindset, you change your perception and style of behavior. And thus the world around you will change. Not only because now you are looking at your environment through the prism of your new thoughts and emotions, but also because internal changes will allow you to act in ways you never did and did not even think to do while you were thinking with the old patterns.
And even if you change the world around without changing yourself, you still have a problem: you will remain yourself, seeing the changes you dreamed of. You will be the same person, with the same unchanged vices, anger, negative emotions, a tendency to self-destruction.
And you can not find what you need in this new world - because your mind is still filled with this negative. And if you get more, without looking at yourself in the soul and without distancing yourself from your ego, it can grow even more. As long as your ego likes to share, find enemies and disconnect, it can create more problems for you and add contradictions in life and the world around you.
2. Manage yourself
Nobody can offend me if I do not allow it myself.
What you feel and how to respond to what is happening depends only on you. This can be a "normal" or generally accepted reaction to a variety of things. And basically that’s what everyone does.
You can follow your own thoughts, reactions and emotions in relation to everything. You do not have to lose your temper, take things to heart and even just react negatively. Maybe not every time and not always. Sometimes the reaction is involuntary. Or the old way of thinking will slip out of habit.
And when you realize that no one from the outside is really able to control your feelings, you can use this way of thinking in everyday life and turn it into your everyday thinking. In a habit that you can strengthen over time. This will make life easier and more pleasant in general.
3. Forgive and forget
Weak never forgives. Forgiveness is a sign of strength.
The principle of "an eye for an eye" can make the whole world blind.
It is impossible to defeat evil with evil. And as they say in the previous advice, you always choose how to treat something. When you begin to resort more and more precisely to this way of thinking, you can treat the event as it is more useful for you and other people.
You realize that forgiveness and oblivion of the past will serve you well and for those people who are close to you. And wasting time on bad memories will not help you after you have learned a lesson from this situation. You just cause yourself unnecessary suffering and do not give yourself the right action at the moment.
If you do not forgive, then you allow the past and the other person to control their feelings. Forgiveness, you will free yourself from these bonds. And then you can focus on something else.
4. You can not achieve anything until you start acting.
One ounce of practice costs more than a ton of prayers.
Few things can be done if you do not take any action. And you can begin to seek solace in reasoning, as Gandhi says. Or endlessly read and learn. And it will seem to you that you are moving forward. But at the same time you will not have any real results, or they will be small.
So, in order to really achieve what you want, and really understand yourself and your world, you need practice. Books can give you mostly knowledge. You need to act and translate knowledge into results.
You can find some effective tips on how to cope with this problem in the article "How to start acting: 9 useful tips." Or you can go to the next item, which, as I found out, gives even better advice on how to start acting.
5. Think about the present moment.
I do not want to foresee the future. I care about the present. God has not given me the opportunity to control what will be.
I realized that the best way to overcome internal resistance, which often prevents us from acting, is to stay in the present and accept it.
Why? When you live in the present you do not worry about what will happen next, because you can not manage it anyway. And the reluctance to move on to an action that arises from imaginary negative future consequences or memories of past failures, loses its power. It becomes easier and to act, and to concentrate on the current moment and to prove yourself from the best side.
Remember that returning to now and staying in it is a psychological habit that you develop, just like your muscles. During the time it becomes stronger, and it becomes easier to quickly return to the present.
6. All of us people
I declare that I am an ordinary person, who is peculiar to err, like any mortal man. However, I have enough humility to admit my mistakes and go back on track.
It’s not very wise to be confident in your own wisdom. It is necessary to remember that the strongest can show weakness, and the wisest can make a mistake.
When you start creating myths from people, even if the reason for this was some unusual results, which they reached, you risk getting separated from them. You begin to feel that you can never achieve what they have achieved, because they are so unlike you. It is very important to just remember that whoever we are, we are all people.
And it seems to me that it’s important to remember that we humans have a habit of making mistakes. If you make unreasonable demands in relation to other people, this will cause unnecessary conflicts from the outside and negative feelings in your soul.
This also needs to be remembered in order to avoid the useless habit of executing oneself for the mistakes committed. Instead, be prepared to understand exactly where you are wrong and what exactly you can learn from this error. And then try again.
7. Demonstrate perseverance
At first you are not noticed, then you are laughed at, then you are struggling, and then you win.
Be persistent. Over time, the resistance around you will be broken. And your inner resistance and the propensity for self-destruction, which will detain you and prevent you from changing, will also weaken.
Find out what you really like to do. Then find an internal stimulus that will motivate you to move, move and move forward. One of the reasons for Gandhi’s success and his method of nonviolence is his own perseverance and the perseverance of his followers. They just did not give up.
Success or victory rarely comes quickly, however much you want it. I believe that one of the reasons why people do not get what they want is that they give up too quickly. The time that they consider sufficient to achieve the desired, is not equal to the time that is usually necessary to achieve the goal. This delusion arises from the world in which we live. A world where advertising constantly offers "magic pills" that can solve all our problems, help to lose weight or earn a lot of money in just 30 days.
Finally, another useful tip on how not to lose perseverance is read Gandhi’s third quotation in this article and do not lose sense of humor. This will help to relate to life in the most difficult times.
8. See good people and help them.
I only count on good things in people. I myself am not without sin, and therefore I do not consider myself entitled to focus on the mistakes of others.
The greatness of a person is especially visible by how much it contributes to the well-being of others.
I understand that once for the ability to lead, muscles were needed, but now it means the ability to get along with people.
There is always a lot of good in people. And also not very good. But you can choose what to focus on. And if you want improvements, focusing on the good that is in people, it will be a good choice. At the same time, your life also becomes easier, because your world and your relationships become more pleasant and positive.
And when you see good in people, it becomes easier for you to find the incentive to be useful to them. And if you need other people, do them good, you do better not only their lives. Over time, it turns out that you get what you give. And the people you helped with begin to strive to help others. And all of you together create an upward spiral of positive changes that grows and becomes stronger.
Strengthening your social interaction skills, you can become an influential person and make this upward spiral more powerful.
9. Be yourself, stay in harmony with your "I"
Happiness is when what you think, say and do, is in harmony.
Always think about the complete harmony between thought, word and deeds. Always set as your goal to clear your thoughts and everything will be fine.
I think the best advice for improving social skills is to behave according to the situation and communicate with all possible sincerity. People really like sincere communication. And you will get a great deal of inner pleasure when your thoughts, words and actions match each other. You will feel powerful and strong.
When words and thoughts correspond to each other, it will be noticeable in communicating with you. Because there is a tonality of voice and body language - some say they represent 90 percent of the communication - that match your words.
If there is no discrepancy between all this information coming from you, people will really listen to what you say. You need to communicate without hypocrisy, falsehood and contradictory messages.
Also, if your actions do not correspond to what you say, your own confidence in what you can do will suffer. Like the belief in you of other people.
10. Continue to grow and develop.
Constant development is the law of life. And a person who always tries to adhere to firmly established views only for the sake of constancy, pushes himself into the wrong position.
You need to constantly improve your skills, habits, or overestimate your judgments. You need to achieve a deeper understanding of the world around you and yourself.
Of course, you may appear unstable or it will look like you do not know what you are doing. You may have problems with sincerity in communication. But if you do not do it, then from the point of view of Gandhi you will be in the "wrong position". In a place where you will defend your old views and cling to them to look permanent, until you realize that something is going wrong. And it’s not very fun. It will be much more useful and happy to choose the path of growth and development.
